TikTok flies away after dentist reveals common oral hygiene mistake: “Stop doing it”
A dentist stunned his TikTok viewers after revealing that the majority of people misuse mouthwashes.

Dr Anna Peterson is a London-based dentist who has told her 20,000 subscribers that “using a mouthwash after brushing your teeth will give you tooth decay”. The TikTok has been watched nearly 3 million times, with people looking more confused than ever in the comments.

“Stop doing it,” Dr. Peterson says in the video. “Your toothpaste with which you brush your teeth contains approximately 1450 pp of fluoride… Your mouthwash contains only 220 pp of fluoride. This is a much lower concentration, and it is not enough to protect your teeth from the sugars you eat and drink. So when you brush your teeth and immediately rinse off with a mouthwash, you are simply washing away all the high concentration fluoride.
Dr Peterson also clarified that she was not “against mouthwash” and that she even regularly recommends it to her patients. She just tells them not to use it after brushing.
The only time you can use a mouthwash after brushing is if you wait 20 to 30 minutes after brushing your teeth, Dr Peterson said in the comments.
Usually, dentists and doctors go viral on TikTok to condemn popular trends – like making false teeth with InstaMorph beads, filing teeth with nail files, and DIY braces made with rubber bands.
Rarely do these professionals go viral to debunk things that people believed to be true. For example, another dentist, Dr Gao, went viral on TikTok for telling people that we had used the wrong amount of toothpaste all this time.
This is why there was a lot of skepticism in Dr. Peterson’s comments.
“Dental hygiene is a lot more complicated than what they teach,” someone wrote.
“Unbeknownst to me, I’ve been trying to destroy my teeth for decades,” another joked. “Cool.”
“Here, I find it difficult to brush my teeth every day,” said one commentator.
