Find out: take a bite out of these great reads
Every time I go to the dentist and get a report on healthy, decay-free gums, I feel like cheering and dancing. Going to the dentist doesn’t scare me anymore like when I was a kid, but I still feel a great relief when things are going well. Likewise, if I hear that something is wrong and I need to make another appointment, I can’t help but think that I have let the dentist down. It’s funny how these childhood emotions carry over into middle age.
Something else that hasn’t changed is the idea that I have to reward myself after a dental appointment. The child in me would have hoped for a treat that my mother didn’t allow because, hello, you just went to the dentist to make sure you don’t get cavities while eating the treats. The adult me no longer needs sugar as a reward (well, not that much), but I still want to stop for something, like a delicious hot drink, which I can never do because the treatment fluoride does not mix with heat. You know what? It is sometimes difficult to be an adult.
That’s why I think everyone needs the Tooth Fairy. What if every time you went to the dentist, the tooth fairy popped up and surprised you with a treat? For example, dear tooth fairy, I would appreciate a cold drink (without sugar!); or someone else taking my car to the gas station; or, better yet, a quiet, carefree afternoon sitting on my patio. I am quite easy to please.
Another idea after the dental appointment is to visit the library. Did you know that reading is a fabulous way to relax after having your teeth checked? Well, it’s true, and the whole family can benefit from post-dental bibliotherapy. And because picture books are so much fun, this week’s reading list is full of picture books on teeth, human and more. Squirrels, cats, whale sharks, vampire bats and humans – yes, it’s a world of dental diversity.
I’m excited to announce that August 22 is National Tooth Fairy Day, which means it’s a great time to celebrate your helicopters, no matter how old they are. So go get that delicious hot beverage after your dentist visit… as long as you’ve waited the proper time for the fluoride to work its magic.
