DVIDS – News – Portsmouth Shipyard (PNS) cuts ribbon for new clinic
PORTSMOUTH SHIPYARD, Maine – Portsmouth Shipyard (PNS) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Naval Branch Health Clinic (NBHC) Portsmouth on Thursday January 6th.
The Surgeon General of the US Navy, Rear Admiral Bruce Gillingham and the Chief of Staff, Small Market and Stand-Alone Military Treatment Facility Organization for the Defense Health Agency (DHA), Mr. Eric Stringer were the guest speakers for the event.
“The completion of this magnificent military processing facility is an important milestone on our journey with DHA to improve health care delivery and preparedness in the communities we serve,” said Rear Admiral Gillingham. “However, as beautiful as this facility is, it is not about bricks and mortar, but above all about the people who care for the naval force and their families. It is their expertise, compassion and dedication to the mission that will bring this facility to life and provide patient-centered medical care to all of its beneficiaries.
U.S. Representative Chris Pappas, along with staff representatives from congressional delegations from Maine and New Hampshire, were guests of honor at the ceremony.
“I was honored to participate in the ribbon cutting at NBHC Portsmouth, a new clinic that will serve Portsmouth Shipyard,” said Congressman Pappas. “This facility will ensure that those working on behalf of our national security and naval readiness have access to the care and services they need.” I congratulate the shipyard on opening this new facility and remain committed to securing all available federal resources to support the shipyard and its workforce as it continues its long tradition of being the best in the country. .
The new facility is a self-contained multi-story health and dental clinic that replaces the current PNS health clinic. Originally built in 1911, the current facility was one of the oldest buildings still
providing patient care in naval medicine. The new 53,568-square-foot replacement facility will house both a medical and dental clinic, with nineteen health services, including primary care,
occupational and behavioral health. The building is equipped with improved computing capabilities, central heating and air conditioning, as well as improved comfort and flow of care for patients.
“The new and improved 402 building exemplifies the shipyard’s motto, ‘Proud of our past… Fit for the future,’ said NBHC Portsmouth Officer in Charge, Captain Leah Soley. “The new facility will provide patients and their families with the same level of care and comfort to which they have become accustomed in the old historic location with a more functional and efficient design, with services tailored to meet their needs. This project has been in the works for some time and we are delighted to open our doors.
NBHC Portsmouth is a branch of Naval Health Clinic New England based in Newport, Rhode Island, and is an outpatient medical treatment center that provides primary medical and dental care and coordinates access to other levels of health services for active service, retirees and eligible family members entitled to care prescribed by Title 10 of the United States Code. Ambulatory physiotherapy, behavioral health, pharmacy, laboratory, basic radiography, audiology and optometry services are also available at the facility.
The clinic, partly staffed by Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Unit Portsmouth, supports the PNS industrial complex through comprehensive occupational health and safety monitoring programs, industrial hygiene, medical examinations and the treatment of occupational injuries and illnesses.
Portsmouth Shipyard is the Navy’s center of excellence for the maintenance, modernization and repair of attack submarines. As a NAVSEA field activity, PNS is committed to maximizing the material readiness of the fleet by safely delivering quality initial work, on time and on budget.
